Non-Woven Active membrane Composites for High Performance Semo-disposable Garments
At AVANTEX 2007 a unique concept for the manufacture of semi-disposable, multi-use water-resistant and breathable outdoor garments will be introcuced. It has been developed by EXTEN S.A., a Swiss company with expertise in the production of multilayer plastic films and laminates for hygiene, medical and technical applications.
EXTEN had previous experience of the extrusion and lamination of breathable monolythic membranes, coextruded for waterproof fabrics under the company’s Smylex brand. The company has now succeeded in producing a three-layer laminate fabric suitable for the manufacture of semi-disposable, multi-use multipurpose garments aimed at outdoor enthusiast.
The laminate consists of a waterproof and breathable film produced with Du Pont Hytrel® polymers. This membrane is sandwiched between two layers of non-woven material – one of which is based on Spunlaced ultrasoft polyesther fibres, the other one is based on Spunlaid hydrophobic polypropylene. The inner non-woven layer plays as a collector of water vapour – in most cases perspiration – creating a humidity gradient between inside and outside the jacket; this gradient “push” water vapour throughout the hydrophilic and breathable Hytrel® membrane for best evaporation through the nonwoven outerlayer. The outer layer is tear and scrub resistant and water-repellent: Hytrel® membrane gives the garment an outstanding water- and wind-proofness thanks to its monolithic physical structure. The finished garment produced under the Exten concept guarantees long term water-resistance and breathability, but is not washable.
EXTEN is convinced there is a vast market potential for high-performance semi-disposable outdoor wear, where the user receives the benefits associated with premium garments, in terms of weatherability and comfort, in a much more cost effective offering, coming from lower raw material costs (NW vs fabric) and high speed process typical of NW converting industry.
This new concept will create a market demand in daily life for sportswear garments, when high performance at low cost is requested for just-in-case usage and/or for membership/gadget articles.
